Watch: Funeral Mass for former Notre Dame Football Coach Lou Holtz

The funeral mass for former Notre Dame Football Coach Lou Holtz was held Monday at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on Notre Dame’s campus.

Holtz was laid to rest at Cedar Grove Cemetery alongside his wife, Beth, in the shadow of the Golden Dome.

“Faith and prayer were not additions to Lou Holtz’s life. They were its foundation. They made him the man he was,” said former Notre Dame President Father John Jenkins at the Mass.

One of the many family members who honored Lou was his son, Skip Holtz.

“We’re all here to mourn his loss. I also want to celebrate the life he lived,” he said. “If you met him, you were happy. If you interacted with him, you were lucky. If you were friends with him, you were favored. If you were coached by him, you were fortunate. If he was your dad, you were blessed. I love you, dad,” said Skip.

Holtz coached at Notre Dame for 11 seasons and led Notre Dame to a national championship in 1988. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Holtz is the only college football coach to lead six different programs to bowl games and the only coach to guide four different programs to the final top 15 rankings.

Holtz died on March 4, 2026. He was 89. He entered end-of-life hospice care in Orlando on Januar 30, 2026.
