Federal agents carried out raids Wednesday at multiple locations in northwest Indiana, including a home in Schererville and two restaurants-Paragon in Hobart and Gino’s Steakhouse in Merrillville.
Authorities were seen removing boxes of documents and other materials from the Schererville residence as part of the investigation.
According to a newly unsealed federal indictment, the restaurants were allegedly used to conceal a multi-state gambling, extortion, and money-laundering operation that spanned several years.
A total of 22 individuals have been indicted. Prosecutors identify James Gerodemos, also known as “Jimmy the Greek,” and Dean Gialamas as the alleged leaders of the operation.
Court documents claim the organization included more than 20 people with specific roles such as bookies, collectors, and enforcers. Investigators allege the group ran an illegal sports betting business that generated as much as $900,000 during the Super Bowl alone and used intimidation to collect debts.
Gerodemos has a prior conviction involving possession of illegal fireworks and previously served six months in prison.
