Indiana Congressman Rudy Yakym and Colorado Congresswoman Brittany Pettersen have introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at preventing youth suicide.

The Evidence-Based Youth Suicide Prevention Act of 2026 would direct the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to develop evidence-based strategies focused on education, awareness and prevention efforts for young people.

Yakym called the bill an important step toward protecting children and supporting families, while Pettersen shared the personal loss of her brother to suicide and said communities need proven programs that can save lives.

Suicide remains the second leading cause of death among young people in the United States.
