The Michigan Natural Resources Commission has approved new deer hunting regulations that will limit hunters in the Lower Peninsula to one buck per season.
The previous limit allowed hunters to harvest two bucks each season. State officials said the change is intended to help protect and strengthen the buck population.
The new one-buck rule is scheduled to take effect in March 2027.
Commissioners also voted to eliminate Michigan’s restricted firearm zone. Under previous rules, hunters in certain areas were limited to using straight-walled cartridges and shotguns because of population density concerns.
Beginning in November, hunters will be allowed to use any legal hunting rifle in those areas.
