New FBI data shows simple assault was the most common crime reported in Indiana during 2024, with nearly 38-thousand incidents recorded statewide.

Researchers analyzing FBI crime data found a simple assault was reported more than once every 14 minutes across participating Indiana law enforcement agencies.

Drug and narcotic violations ranked second with nearly 30,000 cases, followed by all other larceny offenses at more than 27,000.

Shoplifting and motor vehicle theft rounded out the top five most common crimes.

Despite the numbers, researchers say overall crime rates in Indiana actually declined nearly 11 percent from 2023 to 2024, continuing a nationwide downward trend.
