New court records show 22-year-old Sharod Grafton is accused of taking his mother’s car at gunpoint in Chicago before a LaPorte County sheriff’s deputy was shot inside Franciscan Health Michigan City on Friday.
Police say Deputy Samuelson tried to take Grafton into custody in the emergency room when a struggle broke out. Investigators say Grafton pulled a gun and shot the deputy three times before the gun jammed.
Grafton then ran from the hospital and later hid near the area before police caught him.
Deputy Samuelson went through eight hours of surgery.
Grafton’s initial hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
