Legislation sponsored by Michigan Congressman Tim Walberg received attention this week during a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing.
The proposal, known as the Choice in Automobile Retail Sales, or CARS Act, seeks to limit federal regulations that supporters say could restrict consumer vehicle choices.
Walberg said the measure would allow consumers and manufacturers to determine the future of the automotive market through innovation rather than government mandates.
The legislation would prevent federal regulators from imposing rules that effectively require specific vehicle technologies and would direct the Environmental Protection Agency to revise regulations that limit the availability of vehicles based on engine type.
Supporters argue the bill protects affordability and consumer choice, while critics contend emissions standards are needed to address environmental concerns.
