Mishawaka Police have arrested two people accused of abusing and neglecting a teenage family member over a period of several years.
Police arrested Ryan Basham, 24, and Steffanie Basham, 54, following an investigation into allegations of severe physical abuse.
According to court documents, medical personnel discovered the victim had nearly 100 injuries, including fractured bones and scars investigators said were consistent with injuries caused by scissors, pliers and human bites.
Ryan Basham faces multiple charges, including aggravated battery resulting in the loss or impairment of a bodily function, domestic battery with a deadly weapon, domestic battery causing serious bodily injury, domestic battery causing moderate bodily injury, domestic battery and strangulation.
Investigators said the victim told police that Ryan Basham repeatedly assaulted them using pliers and a hammer, bent fingernails until they came off and bit the victim when no weapon was available. The victim also alleged being strangled with an extension cord, punched and subjected to other forms of abuse.
Steffanie Basham is charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious injury. Police said the victim reported that she was aware of the alleged abuse, failed to report it and defended Ryan Basham.
WNDU reports both defendants have pleaded not guilty. Ryan Basham is scheduled for an initial hearing on June 18, while Steffanie Basham is scheduled to appear in court on June 24.
