A Mishawaka man was arrested early Saturday after police say he pointed a handgun at an officer responding to a welfare check.

Officers were dispatched shortly after 4 a.m. to a residence in the 1500 block of Tremont Drive.

According to police, a 50-year-old resident came out of the home carrying a handgun and allegedly pointed it at an approaching officer. The officer retreated and took cover while the man reportedly shouted threats and profanities before returning inside the residence.

Police said the man later came back outside and sat on the front porch.

He was eventually taken into custody without further incident and transported to the St. Joseph County Jail.

The man is preliminarily charged with intimidation and pointing a firearm.
