A new state survey shows Indiana farmers planted nearly one-point-six million acres of overwinter living covers this year to protect local soil and water.

The Indiana Conservation Partnership reports these efforts prevented nearly one-point-eight million tons of sediment from entering state waterways—enough to fill seventeen thousand train cars.

The data also reveals seventy percent of Indiana’s row crop acres were left entirely untilled over the winter to boost soil health.
