Resale to the Rescue: Turning donations into lifesaving support for animals across Michiana

What began as a simple idea to help local animal rescue organizations has grown into one of Michiana’s most successful nonprofit resale operations.
Located on McKinley Avenue in Mishawaka, Resale to the Rescue is an upscale nonprofit resale store that uses proceeds from donated merchandise to support animal welfare organizations throughout the region. The organization’s motto, “You save money, we save lives,” reflects its mission of transforming donated household items, furniture, clothing, and décor into funding for local animal rescue efforts.
The nonprofit’s primary goals are to increase the number of animals that are spayed and neutered, boost adoption rates for homeless pets, reduce euthanasia in local shelters, and educate the public about animal welfare resources available in the community.
Resale to the Rescue supports five core animal welfare organizations in the Michiana area: Heartland Small Animal Rescue, Pet Refuge, Meow Mission, the Frantz Fund, and the Humane Society of St. Joseph County. The organization also provides grants and assistance to numerous other rescue groups throughout northern Indiana and southwest Michigan. According to the nonprofit, it has provided financial assistance to more than 20 animal welfare organizations since opening.
The organization relies heavily on community donations and volunteers. Residents can donate gently used furniture, home décor, clothing, and other household items, which are then sold through the resale store. Revenue generated from those sales helps fund veterinary care, spay-and-neuter programs, rescue operations, and adoption efforts conducted by local animal welfare groups.
Over the years, the nonprofit has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for local animal organizations. The store raised more than $425,000 for animal welfare efforts within its first several years of operation, with much of its revenue directed back into rescue programs throughout the region.
In addition to supporting animal rescues financially, Resale to the Rescue also serves as a community resource, encouraging residents to shop, donate, volunteer, and learn more about animal welfare issues. The organization continues to accept donations and operate its retail and donation centers in Mishawaka.
For many animal advocates across Michiana, Resale to the Rescue has become more than just a thrift store. It has become a lifeline for rescue organizations working every day to provide shelter, medical care, and second chances for thousands of animals in need.
