The family of a New Prairie High School baseball player seriously injured in last year’s bus crash has filed a lawsuit against Amazon.

The lawsuit was announced, last week, in Chicago, after th family’s son racked up more than $1.2 million in medical bills and continues to recover from life-changing injuries. The teen was among several students and coaches hurt when a box truck slammed into two school minibuses in May of 2025.

The driver, Shawn Akison, is serving a 12-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to intoxicated driving charges causing catastrophic and serious bodily injury.

The lawsuit claims Amazon failed to properly screen Akison before allowing him to deliver through its Relay program, despite what attorneys describe as a history of driving and drug-related offenses. Amazon says the crash was a tragedy but declined further comment because of the ongoing litigation.
