Hensley Legal Group and the South Bend Cubs are partnering to bring the Backpacks 4 Good program to South Bend for the first time, providing free backpacks filled with school supplies to students ahead of the new school year.

The event is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon CDT at Four Winds Field at Coveleski Stadium, 501 W. South St., South Bend.

Each backpack will be distributed at no cost and includes two pocket folders, No. 2 pencils, a pencil sharpener, pencil pouch, crayons, a glue stick, 5-inch scissors and a reusable water bottle.

According to Hensley Legal Group, the Backpacks 4 Good program has distributed more than 50,000 backpacks across Indiana since launching in 2021. The organization plans to give away more than 64,000 backpacks statewide during events this summer, including stops in Greenwood, Fishers, Evansville and, for the first time, South Bend.

Officials say the program is designed to help families offset the rising cost of back-to-school supplies and ensure students have the materials they need for the classroom.
