The Elkhart City Council has approved a change that could bring up to one million dollars a year in additional state road funding.
Council members voted 8-to-0 to transfer collection of the city’s vehicle surtax from Elkhart County to the city, as required under a new Indiana law.
City officials say most drivers won’t see any change in what they pay. The annual $25 vehicle surtax will remain the same, but the money will now go directly to the City of Elkhart, making it eligible for additional state funding for road repairs and infrastructure improvements.
