A woman riding an electric bicycle was hospitalized after being struck by an SUV Monday evening in Elkhart County.

The crash happened around 7:20 p.m. Sept. 7 at County Road 13 and Broadway Boulevard.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, an 18-year-old Elkhart woman driving a Chevrolet Traverse was northbound on County Road 13 behind the electric bicycle. Investigators say the SUV moved left to pass the bicycle and another vehicle before merging back into traffic.

As the bicyclist began turning east onto Broadway Boulevard, the SUV struck the rear passenger side of the bicycle. The rider was thrown from the bicycle and then run over by the SUV, according to investigators.

The 56-year-old Elkhart woman riding the bicycle was taken to Memorial Hospital with a broken arm and possible internal injuries.

The SUV driver was not injured and was wearing a seat belt.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash.
