Demolition possible for fire-damaged LaFayette building in South Bend

The future of one of downtown South Bend’s historic buildings is in question following a major fire earlier this year.
City officials say restoring the five-story LaFayette Building could cost more than 20-million dollars.
A recent report found that damage from a fire more than 80 years ago was never properly repaired.
June’s fire made matters worse, with crews using approximately one-million gallons of water to extinguish the flames.
Even limited rehabilitation is expected to cost around 11-million dollars.
The city has collected nearly 3-point-6-million dollars from insurance.
WSBT reports South Bend’s Redevelopment Commission is weighing preservation options, but the building could be torn down if restoration proves impractical.
Investigators have yet to determine what started the June fire.
