High school athletes in Indiana are beginning to make money through advertising and endorsement deals.
The Indiana High School Athletic Association says 54 student athletes have reported personal brand agreements since the practice was approved in May. Some deals involve social media promotions, while one cross-country runner received a five-thousand-dollar shoe endorsement.
Students cannot use their school’s name or uniform in advertisements, and the deals cannot be used as recruiting incentives.
State lawmakers are reviewing the practice but have not recommended new legislation.
They are encouraging more financial education for student athletes.
