A LaGrange Police Department officer fired his gun multiple times at a suspect’s vehicle during a vehicle pursuit originating in Middlebury.

The chase happened around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

A 1997 Chevrolet van driven by 23 year old Cesar Felipe Jaramillo-Moreno from Goshen, was traveling eastbound on County Road 600 S, west of County Road 600 W, just outside of Topeka at a high rate of speed, according to Indiana State Police.

Officers from the LaGrange Police Department had deployed stop sticks in an attempt to deflate the vehicle’s tires and slow the vehicle.

At one point, one of the LaGrange Police officers, fearing for his safety, fired multiple shots at the van.  The van then struck a fence and came to a stop, according to Indiana State Police.

Jaramillo-Moreno was not struck by the officer’s gunfire and was taken into custody after a taser was deployed by officers.

Jaramillo-Moreno was initially taken to a local hospital and, afterward, was taken to the LaGrange County Jail.

No officers were injured during the incident.
