Plan to revamp Elkhart schools could arrive in September or October

(Dani Messick/Elkhart Truth)

Progress has been slow for Elkhart Community Schools board members trying to come up with a plan to revamp the district.

Superintendent Robert Haworth hoped school officials would have come up with a strategic plan by July. That came and went, but Haworth says the seven-member board has been talking and he’s now hopeful that talks will reach their conclusion in October, according to our reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth.

School officials in April announced a proposal to place 10th-, 11th- and 12th-graders at Memorial High School. Ninth-graders would go to Central High School. Sixth-graders would join seventh- and eighth-graders at North Side and West Side middle schools. Pierre Moran Middle School would join two elementary schools in serving students in pre-k through eighth-grade.

A work session among ECS board members is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the J.C. Rice Educational Services Center at 2720 California Road. The issue could come up there or at another board meeting on Sept. 27.
