Michigan spending requires a bit of sleuthing to track down

TAYLOR, Mich. (AP) — How do Michigan lawmakers spend money? It might require a map, census data and a Google search to get answers.

The new budget includes $10 million for 20 recipients identified only with general descriptions and the population of their unnamed community.

For example, there’s $30,000 to revive a greenhouse, $250,000 to paint a water tower, $250,000 for drone development and $2.5 million for a youth fair.

The greenhouse is at Kennedy High School in suburban Detroit, and the water tower belongs to tiny Athens. The drone project is at the Alpena airport, and the fair is in Kent County.

Sen. Dave Hildenbrand says lawmakers know where the money is going. He says using population and a general description of the recipient is a common way for staff to draft legislation.
