South Bend looking to crowdfunding for MLK, Hesburgh statue

South Bend is looking for public help to better display a monument to the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and the Reverend Theodore Hesburgh.

A local sculptor has been commissioned to capture in bronze the iconic image of the civil rights leader and the Notre Dame President locking hands at a Chicago civil rights rally in 1964, according to the South Bend Tribune.

Donations from the University, the St. Joseph County Community Foundation, and others are picking up the $240,000 tab for the statue. The city is looking to raise $20,000 by March 1, which it will then match, in order to create a real destination for the display site in Leighton Plaza, which doesn’t ordinarily draw much foot traffic.
