Future of gravel pit near Goshen airport in the hands of Goshen City Council

The decision on the future of a proposed gravel pit near the Goshen Municipal Airport won’t be made by the Elkhart Redevelopment Commission.

In a meeting Tuesday, members of the commission chose not to vote on the gravel pit, saying it wasn’t their decision to make, according to the Elkhart Truth.

Instead, they feel it should be the Goshen City Council that decides the fate of the proposed sand and gravel minding site between C.R. 40 and C.R. 42 northeast of the airport.

Despite a push by Goshen city leaders for manufacturing businesses to move in around the airport, city officials like Mayor Jeremy Stutsman feel the water in the gravel pit would attract birds, which would cause a danger for planes taking off and landing at the airport.

The Goshen Board of Zoning Appeals will take up the issue Thursday.
