Osolo Township Fire Department says “jaws of life” was stolen from truck

(Amanda Bilancio/Elkhart Truth)

It’s not often you hear of a fire department looking for a theft suspect, but that is the case in Osolo Township.

Somebody stole thousands of dollars worth of equipment from one of the department’s fire trucks during the department’s annual dinner at the Matterhorn Restaurant on Cassopolis St. on Feb. 18, according to the Elkhart Truth.

One of the firefighters noticed a car circling a fire truck parked behind the restaurant, went to investigate and discovered one of the compartments on the fire truck was opened and that a hydraulic power unit was missing. The unit, better known as the “jaws of life,” is used to rescue people from wrecked vehicles and is worth $6,000.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
