There will not be an Elkhart Police substation in the Washington Gardens apartment complex.
The Elkhart City Council said this week they will not approve funding $26,500 to outfit a apartment at the complex lease to the city for free with police equipment.
Councilman David Henke withdrew the planned ordinance, telling ABC 57’s Sara Rivest it wouldn’t be fair to taxpayers.
“Asking for us, at city expense, we already subsidize with our tax dollars, this would be an additional expenditure and it’s unfair to our tax payers,” says Henke.
It’s still possible a substation could be built near the complex, which has been a public safety issue for years.
“We’re going to be building a department somewhere the question is where is that building going to be and what the cost is going to be,” says City Council President Brian Dickerson told ABC 57.
