GARY, Ind. (AP) — The owner of a northwest Indiana potato chip company that has been in business since 1928 in Gary says he’s closing.

Peerless Potato Chips owner John Hogg tells The (Northwest Indiana) Times that the bankruptcy of its main distributor, Central Grocers, “was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Hogg says his potato chips have gradually lost shelf space at supermarkets and pharmacies. About 15 employees were laid off from the potato chip factory. Hogg called them “very dedicated people.”

Hogg says he tried to sell the company but he couldn’t draw “a fair price.” He says he hasn’t taken a paycheck in two years and is suffering from lung cancer. He says it’s time to “call it a day.”

Hogg’s father founded the company 89 years ago.
