A Middlebury man accused of helping his half-brother beat up a Michigan State Police trooper has been declared competent to stand trial.

A Berrien County judge made the ruling Wednesday in the case of 19-year-old Travis Wise. He’ll now go to trial in September.

A state trooper tried to pull over his half-brother, 21-year-old Michael Barber, in February on U.S. 31. Barber crashed his bike near Buchanan, then started fighting with the trooper. Wise allegedly jumped in to help Barber in the attack.

Barber was sentenced to at least 14 years in prison last month.

It’s believed the pair could also be connected with a recent string of thefts: one in Mishawaka, the other at a gun store in Shipshewana.
