South Bend area restaurants dealing with labor shortage

It’s not just Elkhart County restaurants that are having issues filling open positions. South Bend restaurants feel their pain, too.

South Bend-Mishawaka has an unemployment rate of 3-percent in May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Elkhart-Goshen, meanwhile, checked in at 2.1-percent.

While the good times are rolling for job seekers, places like Hacienda Restaurants are having to adapt. The South Bend Tribune says the restaurant has raised wages, enhanced benefits, offered a free shift meal, and has invested money in employee appreciation to both hire and keep workers.

Fast food restaurants in South Bend, meanwhile, have had to close early at times due to a lack of workers. One thing that might help is the inclusion of self-service kiosks instead of cashiers at places like McDonalds, which has announced plans to roll out the kiosks in the near future.
