MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) — Michigan City now requires newly-built homes to have carbon monoxide detectors.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports Sunday that officials in Michigan City have approved the ordinance which is modeled after one adopted nearly a year ago in LaPorte.

The ordinance was approved Tuesday by Michigan City’s City Council.

Michigan City Fire Chief Randy Novak says the ordinance has to be approved by the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office. He says a hearing is planned Nov. 7.

The newspaper says the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists most carbon monoxide leaks as coming from furnaces and other heat sources, like stoves.

Blocked flues and chimneys also can allow dangerous levels of the gas to increase inside homes.
