Former Benton Harbor superintendent ordered to pay $46k in restitution

(Taylor Popielarz/ABC 57)

A former Superintendent of Benton Harbor Area Schools will have to pay back the district $46,000 in money he took in school funds during his denure.

Dr. Leonard Seawood was also sentenced in Berrien County court to 90 days in jail and five years of probation.

He was charged after it was determined he stole over $45,000 from the district by claiming vacation days, but not actually taking the vacations. It was a scheme so he wouldn’t lose the vacation time he was given at the end of the year, so he filed for the vacation days under false pretenses.

Seawood was found guilty of embezzlement in December.
