Several Elkhart parks remain closed due to flood damage

Record flooding in February forced Elkhart to temporarily close its city parks.

While many of these parks have been reopened, several remain closed to ensure the public’s safety as recovery efforts continue.

These include American, Beardsley, Gans, and Studebaker parks.

American Park

When flood waters receded from American Park, they left behind mounds of sand. Elkhart Buildings and Grounds crews are working to remove this sand, and American Park is anticipated to reopen in May.

Beardsley Park

Beardsley Park experienced damage to its parking lot and erosion of the driveway leading into the parking lot. The Elkhart Street Department will regrade the parking lot and driveway, and Beardsley Park is anticipated to reopen in June.

Gans Park

Gans Park remains closed due to excessive water damage as well as its location in the flood plain. Residents may use Baker, Sterling, or Studebaker parks as an alternative. Gans Park is currently closed indefinitely.

Studebaker Park

Studebaker Park experienced damage to its driveway. The Elkhart Street Department will be repaving the driveway, and Studebaker Park is anticipated to reopen in May.
