A study of South Bend’s housing markets suggests that a shakeup might be needed.
Zimmerman/Volk Associates is a housing consulting firm. Their report suggests that the city is doing well in offering single-family homes and larger-scale apartment complex.
But the South Bend Tribune reports there is a “missing middle” of housing like duplexes, condos, and townhomes.
The consulting firm points out that the south side, northwest side and west sides of South Bend could use these type of properties, with rent prices ranging from $450 to $900 a month.
The company also believes the city’s patchwork of vacant properties would be ideal to fill the “missing middle.”
The city of South Bend paid $45,000 for the study as it explores how to fill vacant lots created in Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s “1,000 homes in 1,000 days” initiative to destroy or rehab blighted homes.
