UPDATE: Arrest made in the dragging of an Elkhart County Sheriff’s officer

It happened around 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, Sep. 8, in the area of Southdale Dr. and Hively Ave. in Elkhart.

The officer stopped the driver, Derrick Woods, 27, on suspicion of drunk driving.

While attempting to perform field sobriety tests on the driver, Woods took off on foot. The officer deployed his taser, but Woods continued to take off.

Woods circled back and got into his vehicle as the officer reached the driver’s side door.  The officer, who was trying to stops Woods was dragged for approximately 15 to 20 feet as the suspect continued to drive off.

The officer was thrown from the vehicle and was injured.

The officer received minor injuries to his head, shoulder, and legs, was treated and released from Elkhart General Hospital.

Monday morning, police received a tip that Woods was at the Econo Lodge on Cassopolis Street. He was arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement, as well as leaving the scene of a crash.
