Occupant, firefighter and officer injured after house explosion in South Bend

A resident and four first responders were hurt after a house exploded in South Bend.

It happened around 7:50 a.m. on Saturday, Sep.29.

Clay Fire units were sent to the 19000 block of Greenacre Street on the report of an explosion and fire.

Once there, crews were able to knock down the fire and contain the blaze within 15 minutes.

Three firefighters from Clay Fire sustained non-life-threatening injuries while battling the blaze.

An officer with the St. Joseph County Police Department entered entered the house and located the occupant of the home trapped beneath debris from the explosion. The officer was able to free the victim from the debris. The officer and the occupant sustained injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation, and were taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the explosion and the fire remain under investigation.
