A 35-year-old man Hartford City man was arrested after Berrien County Sheriff’s deputies say he barricaded himself in his girlfriend’s home and threatened to shoot anyone who entered.

The standoff happened on around 4:45 p.m. on  Friday, Dec. 21, in the 5400 block of Forest in Watervliet Township when police got a call from a woman who asked that they check her home out of concern her boyfriend, who had valid warrants for his arrest might be hiding there, according to a news release from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.

While the deputies were searching the home, Petersen barricaded himself in a bedroom and he claimed to have a gun and threatened to shoot anyone who entered the bedroom, the news release stated.

The deputies, troopers, and officers from several agencies spent the next five hours negotiating with Petersen to try to get him to surrender peacefully.

After the continuous negotiations failed, police, along with a K9 officer, entered the bedroom and used “less lethal” devices to subdue Petersen and take him into custody.

During the five hour negotiation period, Petersen threw a utility knife at the officers, however nobody was hit or injured.

At the time Joshua Petersen was subdued and taken into custody, he was holding a piece of metal that was shaped to resemble the appearance of a handgun, however no “real” handguns or firearms were located inside of the residence. Petersen appeared to have self-inflicted wounds on his arms.

Petersen was taken to Spectrum Lakeland Hospital for treatment of his injuries, then brought to the Berrien County Jail on a slew of charges.
