A Middlebury man was killed in a fiery plane crash in Elkhart County.

The crash happened just after 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21 near the intersection of County Road 33 and County Road 42, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57.

The pilot, identified as Neal Myers, 55, was the only person on board. Myers took off from Goshen Municipal Airport and was practicing maneuvers when witnesses said the plane nosedived into a field.

Smoke and fire could be seen coming from the wreckage after it hit the ground.

Some power lines were taken down, resulting in outages in the area. Emergency crews at the crash site had to use extreme caution because of high-voltage lines on the ground.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the cause of the crash, ABC 57 reported.
