Michiana has two of the state’s 19 finalists seeking to win a grant that would benefit their child care organizations.
The United Way of St. Joseph County and the Kosciusko County Community Foundation are among the 19 finalists in a $1 million grant competition.
The goal is to provide access to more high-quality, affordable child care for children under the age of six.
A 2018 study showed a lack of childcare options for parents who live in what’s called “a child care desert”. That’s a neighborhood with only one spot available for every three kids. The report says more than 45% of children in St. Joe County, as well as statewide, live in one of these deserts.
Ten grants of $100,000 will be given in December.
