The driver who allegedly hit and killed a construction worker on SR 931 is facing felony charges.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office says 54 year-old Gary Matthew Carnicom has been charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance, and reckless operating of a vehicle in a highway work zone.

The crash Tuesday morning killed 65 year-old Ernest Lewis of Elkhart.

The police report suggests Carnicom drove his van through a barrier of traffic cones into the work site before striking Lewis, who was in the designated safe area behind those cones. His bail hearing was scheduled for Thursday.
