Goshen taking next step in tree canopy goal

Goshen Mayor Jeremy Stutsman made an ambitious goal, to double the cities tree canopy in the next 25 years. Now it’s up to science to decide what we are planting. To get a 45% tree canopy by 2045 officials estimate the city will have to plant about 2,000 trees a year, or 50,000 trees total. In order to that they have to figure out what trees the city already has planted and which would be the best to make that goal attainable.

The person hired for the study says that may include looking at trees that generally aren’t seen around this area. The study will cost a little less than $10,000 and should be complete by the end of May.

As the city pursues their new green agenda there will be public meeting periodically through the end of March. You can read more with The Elkhart Truth.
