Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) has been approved to build and operate its largest solar generation facility in Michiana.

I&M plans to collaborate on the project with the University of Notre Dame.

“We are particularly pleased to be able to participate in a project that will be here in St. Joseph County and make a real impact on the University’s carbon emissions reductions,” said Paul A. Kempf, Notre Dame Assistant Vice President of Utilities and Maintenance.

The solar facility will be located near the Indiana Toll Road and Bittersweet Road in St. Joseph County, and will have a capacity of 20 megawatts, which is enough energy to power 2,700 homes each year.

Construction is scheduled to begin in April, with the facility expected to be operational by late fall.

Currently, I&M operates four solar generation facilities, three of which are in Indiana.
