Benton Township Police were called out to the 1300 block of East Empire Avenue around 11:50 p.m. Saturday for a report of a pedestrian hit by a car.

There police say 54-year old Michael Swanigan from Benton Harbor was hit by a car while traveling west on his motorized wheelchair.

When Police arrived they learned that the vehicle involved in the crash drove away from the scene.

Swanigan was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Authorities recovered parts of the suspect’s vehicle at the scene and say they might be driving a 2008-2012 Chevy Malibu.

Police do not have a suspect at this time.
