Hall of Fame Football Coach Tom Kurth, who led Elkhart players for 43 years, has died.
Generations of kids and parents were touched by his guidance across five decades. Kurth, a Blue Blazer through and through, was instrumental in the integration of the program in the 1960s and 70s.
Coach Kurth was 85.
Coach Shattuck, the Head Coach of the new united Elkhart High School Lions, said yesterday that it was “an honor and a privilege to have been able to get to know Coach Kurth” during the short time he has lived in Elkhart.
It was an honor and a privilege to have been able to get to know Coach Kurth during the short time we have lived in Elkhart. You will not find a human being who cares more about this community and its children than Coach Kurth. Rest in peace! https://t.co/Or1XCc1h8l

Really a great man and a top-notch coach. Taught me how to drive a car even though I irritated him. Irritated enough to point that half-finger of his and growl at me. You will be missed coach Kurth
Coach Kurth was my drivers ed teacher..1967. I remember him instilling (or trying) that a drivers license was a privilege & we needed to take seriously that obeying the traffic laws would help keep us out of trouble. He also preached about drinking & driving…DON’T DO IT! Heaven is lucky, they got a good man this week. Thanks coach for all you did for Elkhart & those of us that learned from you.
