A man was arrested in Elkhart on Thursday, Dec. 9, for allegedly stealing a woman’s SUV after she started it to warm it up.

Elkhart police were called to a home on West Marion Street just after 6 a.m. to investigate a reported auto theft in progress.

The victim told officers that she went out and started her Chevrolet Equinox to warm it up shortly before 6 a.m.

The vehicle was parked on the street outside her home.

She said she left the doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition and went inside to get ready for work. A few minutes later, she looked out the window and saw someone driving away in her SUV.

Police tracked the Equinox to a house on Pearl Street. Officers found a man standing outside the SUV with his body mostly leaned inside the vehicle, reports ABC 57.

The man, identified as 34-year-old Alonzo Herr, was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, and for unrelated warrants.
