1,000+ catalytic converters seized from salvage yard in Bristol

Elkhart County Sheriff’s deputies have seized more than 1,000 catalytic converters from a local salvage yard after conducting a search of the premises.

Sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant, Tuesday afternoon, at the business in the 19000 block of County Road 8 in Bristol.

During the search, they seized the catalytic converters that were not properly documented, reports said.

ABC 57 News reports a 4-wheeler, reported stolen from St. Joseph County, was also seized and returned to its owner.

I fail to understand, why politicians do not outlaw the sale and possession of these valuable converters. If there is no sales market for them, the thefts will cease. Likewise, car manufactures can easily VIN number each converter, matching the VIN to the cars VIN . VIN numbers are applies what ? 6 places on a car now during construction?

Cats have to be replaced, they (like most exhaust components) do not necessarily last the entire life of the car. They do have to be replaced by the owner, so the numbers would not match.

A VIN stamped in the shell would be worthless anyway, since the value lies in the platinum inside the thing.
