Car crashes into West View Florist in Elkhart after pursuit with police

A car that crashed into West View Florist on Cassopolis Street in Elkhart was being pursued by Indiana State Police.

Crews were already on scene at the shop, around 4 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, due to the report of a gas leak. But, it was at that same time that Indiana State Police pursuing a car on the Indiana Toll Road.

The chase turned onto Cassopolis Street where the car lost control and drove into the flower shop.

ABC 57 News reports the owners are not sure when they’ll be able to reopen.

The suspect driver, identified as Maki Chandler, 18 of South Bend, then fled the crash scene on foot and attempted to get into a passing vehicle but was taken into custody by an officer with the Elkhart Police Department near the intersection of Cassopolis Street and Bristol Street.

Chandler was arrested for Resisting Law Enforcement and taken to the Elkhart County Jail.

The Elkhart County Prosecutor will review this case and determine all appropriate charges.
