A Niles man convicted in the deadly stabbing of a Dowagiac man in 2009 will *not* get a new trial.
The Michigan Supreme Court ruled they would not take up the appeal filed by Jonathan Castillo who contested his trial based on testimony from a witness and how it was translated from Spanish.
Castillo was convicted in 2009 of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole in the stabbing death of Michael Evans of Dowagiac.
The state Supreme Court said there was insufficient evidence proving any sort of problem. Leader Publications reports Evans was dating the mother of Castillo’s three children and was killed outside the family’s home on Maple Street in Niles after an altercation.
