Michigan State Police to use text message tool to send messages to 911 callers

9-1-1 callers in some Michigan counties will be getting text message updates from Michigan State Police after they call for an emergency.

It’s part of a text messaging tool pilot program and lets the caller know via text message that a trooper is on their way.

In cases where a trooper may be delayed, the caller will receive real time updates, according to Michigan State Police.

Not all call types will receive the messaging, including sensitive safety matters.

The messaging tool currently applies to callers in Branch, Calhoun, Eaton, and St. Joseph counties.

The test pilot program will be evaluated after 90 days.
