A man went to Elkhart County court with doctors for a competency evaluation for the murder trial for the death of his wife.

Police were called to Cone Street in August on reports of 27-year-old Ciarra Thompson unconscious, not breathing, and bloodied.

The Goshen News reports that 36-year-old Matthew Thompson claimed he found his wife on the floor, not waking up.

The victim was dead when officers arrived. They say they found blood throughout the living room and kitchen and that the wife had open wounds on her head and neck.

Investigators say Thompson admitted that he he punched his wife on her head and shook her and that she hit her head on the kitchen counter. His trial is set for May 6.
