It’s 63 years in prison for a man accused in a murder in 2021.

The shooting happened in July of 2021 on Cleveland Avenue in Elkhart.

Police were dispatched for a call about gunfire in the area around 9 p.m., and when they arrived they found a man, Deontae Harris, in the street.

He was transported to the Elkhart General Hospital but died from his injuries. Sherman Whitener was accused of the murder and was sentenced to 63 years, though he argued that evidence presented at trial pointed to self-defense.

According to the Goshen News, Whitener said he intends to appeal.
