An Indiana State Police trooper’s vehicle was struck early Monday morning by a suspected intoxicated driver, who later fled the scene and led officers on a brief foot chase.
The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. on I-80/94 near Calumet Avenue during an ongoing crash investigation. Two troopers had parked their patrol cars with emergency lights activated, blocking lanes as they conducted field sobriety tests on another driver. Suddenly, a vehicle rear-ended one of the patrol cars, causing damage to both.
The driver of the striking vehicle fled eastbound, eventually spotted near the 3-mile marker, driving on three wheels with sparks flying. The vehicle crashed into a median wall and became disabled.
The driver, identified as Kyle C. Barbour, 26, of Hammond, exited his vehicle and led police on a chase. He attempted to enter a Hammond Fire Battalion Chief’s truck by hitting the window but was soon apprehended after running across westbound lanes.
Barbour was taken into custody and transported to the Lake County Jail. He faces several preliminary charges, including Operating While Intoxicated, Failure to Report a Crash, Resisting Law Enforcement, and Reckless Driving Causing Property Damage.
