Trine University basketball player killed in crash on I-94 in Michigan

A Trine men’s basketball player is dead after a crash in Michigan.

Michigan State Police say Fred Garland was the only one in the car when it crashed on Interstate 94 around 10 o’clock Wednesday in Calhoun County.

Police believe speed was a factor. Garland was a senior from Detroit majoring in sport management.

The university said he played a key role in Trine’s national championship run last season and was averaging 14 points per game as a starter this season.

Head coach Brooks Miller said “There’s a huge hole in the heart of Thunder basketball.”
